Homeschool Art Classes beginning this Spring

Terrific Tuesdays/ Wonderful Wednesdays

What: Two hour art classes for groups of 5-16 students

When: Two times a month. Tuesdays *1-3

Wednesdays 9-11am, *12:30-2:30 and 3-5 pm

Where: Art by Nina studios, 110 and 114 Mt. View Street, Hot Springs 71913

How: a short drawing lesson (even with pottery) is scheduled every time—without it the other works do not improve. With this instruction students’ “fun” drawings immediately begin to improve. The emphasis is on value, to include perspective, shading, point of interest, repetition, etc. and is sometimes taught with a simple water color, colored pencil, pastels, acrylics, oils, collage, cut paper, or pottery (hand building and wheel throwing in Aug and April). Ceramics are available upon request and may or may not have a small additional charge. Oils are always done on canvas panel, $3; acrylics may be done on canvas panel or watercolor paper, $1. Most other materials and firing are provided. T-shirts are available to cover clothes upon request and are laundered after use.

Age: 6 to ? (parents, grandparents are allowed to participate in these groups).

Price: $25 per month, + additional charge for special materials, such as canvas or special paper

Adult coordinator: one parent must coordinate a group of at least 5 -16 to participate in the $25 a month classes. The one parent would arrange the group time; turn over a list of student/parent names, address, phone, e-mails, set up a schedule of parents to take turns staying to help and collect $. To be able to do this at this price, lesson plans, supplying some of the materials, and teaching are all I do.

Contact: Nina Louton at 501 622-3100 or aoriginals@hotmail.com (put Ter Tues or Won Wed on Subject line)

*Already Scheduled. Call Nina to find out if there is any spaces if you would like to join them. Leave a message and the coordinator’s information will be given if space is available.

Garland County Homeschool Science Fair scheduled for April 3, 2012

From Leslie Goff:

It's that time of year, Homeschoolers!

We will be holding the 4th Annual Homeschool Science Fair on April 3, 2012, in the gym at The Church at Crossgate.

The Homeschool Science Fair is open to students of all ages and there are no limitations on projects.  Let me first say, all homeschoolers are welcome to participate, so feel free to forward this to friends.  Also, if you are new to science fairs, there are a lot of books at the library full of ideas and experiments for science fairs so don’t become overwhelmed.  This is a learning experience, but I want it to be fun and encouraging to your student.  Check out www.sciencebuddies.org for FAQs, fair wizards, and tons of information on science fairs in general. Also, www.stevespanglerscience.com has many projects that take less than a week to complete.

Basically, the goal of entering the fair is not just trying to win an award, but wanting to use what you have taught (or will teach) your child at home in a group setting where they can see how others process information, as well.  Your child will get to brush up on many skills they will use their whole life such as answering questions on work they preformed, confidently presenting their ideas and enjoying the creativity and knowledge of others at a like minded event.

Students are asked to use the scientific method to progress through their experiment.  An exception to this is K-3rd graders.  If they use the scientific method, that is great, but not required for award eligibility.  They may present demonstrative projects if they choose (ie. how a volcano works).  Grades 4-12 will need to follow and present the scientific method for award eligibility.  Grades 8-12 are required to include a research paper, as well, for award eligibility.

If you would like to participate submit the following information by email or snail mail to Leslie Goff, leslie@mgoff.net, 217 Gatehouse Rd., Hot Springs, AR  71913.
1.  Student's Name
2.  Student's Age/Grade
3.  Parent's name
4.  Paren'ts email
5.  Parent's phone
Cost to participate is $7/student.  Please sign up and make payment by March 20, 2012 to the above address.  Trophies will be awarded.

It's going to be a great learning experience!

Park News

As a peaceful winter comes to an end at Petit Jean State Park, there are special events and new activities on the horizon.  We hope that you will join us for some great moments in the park.  They are just around the corner.

Archeology Day – March 17th

Just two days ahead of the official end of winter, Petit Jean State Park will celebrate Archeology Day, part of Archeology Month in Arkansas.  The month’s theme for 2012 is “The Archeology of Communities.”  Petit Jean State Park will feature guest speaker Leslie Walker, from the University of Arkansas Archeology Department, who will present Art and Community at Carden Bottoms. Carden Bottoms, an area just west of the Petit Jean Mountain plateau, is the archeological site of a Mississippian-era Native American village.  Walker will tell us about recent findings from Carden Bottoms that can help us explore the role that art plays in everyday life, community, spirituality and social interaction. Other programs during Archeology Day include tours of Petit Jean State Park’s primary archeological site, Rock House Cave, and an evening program that explores the rock art found at Petit Jean State Park.  All programs for the day are free.  For more detailed information, see our website at http://www.petitjeanstatepark.com and look under “Things to Do.”  Or call the park at             501-727-5441      .

Held in March each year, Archeology Month is designed to broaden the public’s interest and appreciation for Arkansas’s archeological resources and to encourage the public’s participation in conservation and preservation efforts.

Spring Break 2012 - March 19th through 23rd

For Arkansas Spring Break 2012, “School’s Out – State Parks are In!”  For Spring Break Week, Petit Jean State Park has a great line-up on family-friendly programs waiting.  We will host sunset walks, prowling for owls, traditional campfire programs, hikes along the rugged trails of the park, family-friendly programs throughout each day, as well as other free activities to keep visitors happy and engaged with the natural and historic resources of our park.  Come and enjoy a day, or even better stay for the entire week.  Spring Break will soon be here.  And Petit Jean State Park is here for you to experience, remember and treasure.  For information on park schedules, please visithttp://www.petitjeanstatepark.com and look under “Things to Do.”  Or call the park at            501-727-5441      .

Great Escape Weekend & Easter Egg Hunt – April 6th through 8th

Escape to Petit Jean State Park for Easter Weekend to celebrate spring and the great outdoors. Nature walks and family-oriented activities will highlight the weekend.  The celebration will conclude with our annual Easter Egg Scramble, where young folks, divided into appropriate age brackets, dash upon the historic CCC Field to collect around 2,000 Easter eggs in record time!  It’s fun for the whole family and free to the public.

Wildflower Weekend – April 13th through 15th

Trout lilies, spring beauties, lyre-leaved sage, fire pink, wood betony - wildflowers just happen.  No person plants, fertilizes or cultivates.  They begin to pop out from park woodlands in late winter and continue to bloom through the spring, summer and into autumn.  And they are lovely and in abundance at Petit Jean State Park.  This year, spend a weekend discovering more about these natural beauties through park programs and wildflower hikes.  Park interpreters will also share what they know about the medicinal properties of certain flowers and plants.  All programs are free.  Come and discover the wildflowers!

Park News

Mather Lodge and the new Mather Lodge Restaurant are projected to reopen in May.  After more than a year’s construction, the new restaurant will offer an up-to-date kitchen and dining facility built with large log beams and stones, reminiscent of the rustic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)architecture of the 1930s.

Mr. Russ Chitwood, the park’s new Lodge Manager, will take the helm in early March to oversee the reopening.  Mr. Chitwood comes to Petit Jean State Park with years of experience in restaurant and hotel management and looks forward to being part of a new era in the long history of Mather Lodge.

Rent-a-Camps and Rent-a-Teepees reopen in March, along with Camping Areas C & D, which are typically closed during winter months.

Park Superintendent Wally Scherrey welcomes park visitors for the busy camping season ahead and asks park visitors to act in a safe and mannerly fashion, obeying seatbelt and traffic laws, during their time in the park.
